Finished the Harry Potter series recently. I must say, I am a bona-fide fan of the series now. True, the story is great and the characters are so lively and all that! But what I loved the best was her ability to “invent” magical objects. The names really rock!
Not in any particular order the ones that will be of most use to me:
The Pensieve: Don’t you feel that if you had a device into which you could pour your memories and examine them later on? You can pass them on to others. That way you can describe your experiences in the best possible manner 
The Deluminator: Lights out! So many times in the past when I wanted to sneak into the kitchen without being watched while I was nicking a piece of some chocolate or two. This would have been so damn perfect for that purpose.
Time-Turner: Need I say more? Mankind has wanted this since H.G Wells’ time.
Invisibility Cloak: You need this after a late night out in Bangalore so that the stupid cops can’t catch and harass you!
From one fantasy novel to another. Reading the Bartimaeus Trilogy this time. Probably LOTR later. Lets see 
And yeah, after a year and a half of various different prototypes, the CPU-Hotplug Locking finally appears to be sorted out! Cheers!!

i also liked fred’s and george’s inventions…. blackout powder from peru etc.. and even the dark objects… malfoy’s hand of glory which gives light only to the holder, the vanishing wardrobe or whatever that was that got the death eaters into hogwarts.. and also sirius’s two-way mirror… and floo powder..
guess i can go on and on.
but i guess stuff like this has precedents in irish and old english myths and fairytales, which she only developed on… but who cares anyway.
the thing i like most bout the harry potter series is how she hides clues bout new characters n plots in her old books…
most of the names n stuff have been taken form old stories n legends as wanderlust said… the gray lady is said to be the ghost of some castle in scotland….
try eragon and eldest as well as well… have tried lotr…. n it was really good….

Oh yeah, I forgot the Hand of Glory! That was pretty neat, I thought. I didn’t know about these thing having origin in the old English myths and fairytales, since I haven’t read “The Tales of Beedle the Bard” myself!!

I guess the whole thing about linking the clues to the the older books helps maintain the flow in the series.

Planning to Read the Eldest once the third book in the series is out. I hate waiting for ages for the next book
Well, like wanderlust said, the ideas arent completely original. If you followed the original star trek series, the Vulcans (read as Mr. Spock) passed on their memories via a mind meld. So that knowledge once gained would never be lost. It got transmitted from generation to generation.
If u had the invisibility cloak you wouldnt need the deluminator. Though there is the other ability that you could use to find me in Gujarat and drag me back to Bangalore
